Generally, the term “fitness” refers to being in shape and is associated with physical attributes like strength, endurance, and speed, which differs from its use in biology. An evolutionary biologist defines fitness as reproductive success and reflects how well an organism is adapted to its environment. Several methods exist to measure fitness; for example, “absolute fitness” is measured by the ratio of a genotype before and after selection, while “relative Health” measures differential reproductive success.
In other words, how much of the next generation’s gene pool stems from a particular organism (or genotype) when compared with competing organisms (or genotypes). Fitness is simply a measure of reproductive success, no matter the details.
